Our volunteers are the heartbeat of ChannelMom. This spring, over 30 volunteers gave their time to facilitate Bible studies, mentor graduates, and support our reentry programs. Here are a few of their stories.
Sarah: First-Time Facilitator
Sarah joined as a Bible study facilitator in February. She'd never been inside a correctional facility before. She was nervous, unsure of what to expect, and worried she wouldn't connect with the women.
Within three sessions, those fears disappeared. The women's hunger for Scripture, their raw honesty in discussion, and their resilience in the face of incredible hardship moved Sarah deeply. She's already signed up for the fall session.
David: A Mentor's Perspective
David has been mentoring Maria for 18 months. When she was released last summer, he was there to help her navigate the first weeks — accompanying her to parole meetings, helping set up a bank account, and simply being a consistent presence.
The relationship hasn't been easy. There have been setbacks, frustrations, and hard conversations. But David says the breakthrough moments make it all worth it.
The Chen Family: Giving Together
The Chen family — parents and two teenagers — volunteered together at our annual Christmas gift drive. They assembled gift packages for children whose mothers are incarcerated, including books, art supplies, and handwritten cards.
Their teenage son said it was the most meaningful volunteer experience he'd ever had, and the family plans to make it an annual tradition.
